TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Dance is a transformative act that gathers people to commune,
heal, rejoice and reflect collectively.

For over two decades, WKcollective choreographer Wanjiru Kamuyu, has been activating the convergence of pre-professional and professional training with community dance making. Rooted in dance as a catalyst for holistic personal transformation and social change, using a unique blend of dialogue and movement, WKcollective offers a diverse range of intergenerational workshops for a variety of different groups and contexts – dance studios, classrooms, outdoor spaces, community centers, theaters, museums, galleries…

Immersed in creative play and intrigue, each movement experience is tailored to the specific needs of each group of participants. With attention to the whole person, WKcollective fosters workshops through an approach of fun, exploration, experimentation, the stimulation of the imagination and rigor. In a supportive space, each participant is encouraged to question, explore self and collective expression, and experiment with their relationship to dance and space, all while taking creative risks with confidence.

Drawing from a rich source of inspiration, different modalities such as theater, visual arts, music and writing serve as key ingredients used in investigative query and experimentation. These playful investigations form the core foundation of each movement and dance making experience, opening space for each participant to discover and cultivate their individual voices not only as artists but also as critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and leaders.

The WKcollective movement experience is where curiosity, creativity and courage come together to transform movement into a shared language. Each person contributes their unique energy, movement and voice, weaving individual expression into a collective rhythm while embracing the beauty of diversity as a source of communal strength and vitality. Movement thus becomes more than just a practice – it is a path toward well-being, balance and self-discovery, where every gesture is a both intentional and liberating. With each experience, the focus is on individual and collective expression intertwined with joy, transforming movement into an experience that is at once personal, communal and transformative.
